Four things you need to become a Pioneer in your Own life
If it's one thing for certain above all else that my forty-six years on this planet have taught me is...I can choose any path I want for my life at any given moment.
Who knows you better than you? Yes, you hear all the time friends say "I know you better than you know yourself" but at the core who has to live with the decisions you make? I am not speaking of harmful choices or actions, things that may put us in harm's way. I am speaking about choices like where we live, the hairstyle we wear, the job or career we take, what makes us happy, the people we surround ourselves with etc...
Sometimes people's vision of who we are or who we should be don't match who we see ourselves as. There are even times where people only see us as we "use to" be.
I will use myself as an example when I share moments where I have come across people who knew me in the past and still make judgments on those moments and not the person I am today. They want to keep me in the box of quick-tempered, easy to curse you out, not willing to try new things, combative Mari, not the had to start at zero again several years ago, who Practices Yoga, Meditation, and Mindfulness, who's a Writer and Photographer and happens to also be a single mom Mari that I am today. Those that choose to keep me in that box are loosing out on a lot.
I was blessed last night to attend a wonderful event called Pieces of a Dream which is organized by HERStory Lifestyles Organization. It's an organization that caters to Empowering Young Women and Women as a whole to flourish and for fill their dreams regardless of past obstacles. Their Empowerment Vision Board Mixers encourage women to not only dream, think, hope or wish but to actually speak out loud and begin to take the steps in building and Creating their Best Life by creating a Vision Board that will assist in setting goals and making them accountable.
Among several amazing presenters was a woman I am happy to call a friend Sharon "La Loca" Montero from Radio 1039ny. She also happens to be the Communications Director of HSL and a host of other great events throughout my beloved city. I so happen to be on my Instagram account when I came across her share and decided to join her asap.
The Power and Knowledge in that room were off the charts. The wisdom shared and passed along is priceless. These are my new added Inspirations:
NYPD Deputy Chief Kim Royster - First EVER Highest ranking African American woman in NYPD History
FDNY Deputy Chief Tonya Boyd - First African American woman in FDNY history to hold rank as Deputy Chief
Judge Dweynie Paul - First Haitian American elected as New York State Civil Judge
To be a woman in a man's world and make it is an accomplishment but to be the FIRST woman at anything and a Woman of Color at that is beyond an accomplishment it goes without saying a journey that must have been filled with many many obstacles. Some which they shared last night to a room full of eager ears and tear-filled eyes.
Combined together these women have solidified Four things you need to become a Pioneer in your Own life:
-A strong Faith in a Higher power and in Yourself. A support system that believes in you and what you want to accomplish.
-A willingness to persevere when those heavy obstacles come your way. When something is new it will always be challenged.
-Knowledge, arm yourself with all the tools to complete the task. Put in the work, never stop learning, never be the smartest one in your group.
-Whatever you do, do with Passion, Purpose, and Patience. When you believe in your What and Why your Time won't be wasted.
Things truly happen for a reason, stuff is placed in your way for a purpose. Stop, breathe and listen. Create your Best life. Let nothing stand in your way, Be Happy! Whatever needs to be done, whoever has to leave or come into your life make it happen.
