Caught in a Cycle of Hate

Caught in a Cycle of Hate

Hey, how are you? Have you been following the news lately? This was my first week back to work and I managed to have some energy to invest in catching up on all things media related and of course the events in Charlottesville have been weighing heavy on my mind. As I am sure in the minds of many.

*maybe too long for some but this needed to be said*

My daughter said something that no parent wants to ever hear but I am sure that many conversations reflected those same sentiments back in the 60's. She said, "I am not out directly looking for any trouble but if trouble comes to me I am willing to die for what I believe in." What! my daughter is barely twenty-two years old, life has just begun and you have to think about dying? You have to think that someone may harm you because your skin is a shade or two darker than they approve of? You have to consider that if any large gatherings of hate groups occurred you and your friends could get hurt?

This statement, of course, has been on my mind since it left her mouth and I have so many mixed feelings about it. She is my only child, I love her with all my being and I can't keep her locked up forever so what am I to do? Do I cower away from all the years of teaching her to stand up for her beliefs or do I continue to stand behind my teachings and support her regardless of where this journey may lead us?

I never thought that Racism would have such a powerful impact in my adult life. As a child born in the 70's of course, the lingering effects of prior events were all around me but as I got a little older and finally entered H.S. as most teenagers do I began to just focus on myself and not the life of others. My daughter, on the other hand, has always been mindful of the world she exists in and the behavior of others and how it affects her directly. She has been my teacher in subject matters I never wanted to address.

Caught in a Cycle of Hate.

There are many views attached to the label Millennial many are negative but if you are as lucky as I am you have come across some pretty awesome and aware young men and women. My daughter and her friends belong under that umbrella. They are conscious of how their actions and behaviors affect others, they care about their communities and environment. They are not consumed by taking away from others but instead focus on making their individual contributions. They are not afraid to speak their minds and they are not interested in following just not to stir the pot.

My daughter always preaches acceptance and calls out all passive aggressive Racism. She says it is never ok to let remarks or treatments slide just because you don't want to perhaps start an uncomfortable conversation. But today we must have this conversation. Today we must make a choice. Today we must think about my daughter's statement and ask "what parent wants to bury a child?"

Caught in a Cycle of Hate.

Dear Hateful people, why is it so hard for you to admit that what you are doing is wrong and what your ancestors did was deplorable? Why can't you just own up to the fact that you are a people use to taking and never giving. You are users and once you have your fill you discard. You steal and destroy and never accept blame for your part. You talk about preservation of "your" history but your history is covered in blood. Even when faced with the facts you still want to deny. You want to create "peace" for "your" people by destroying others. Your history is based on lies and loss of life and you still want to go on promoting and teaching that to your young.

There would be no United States of America if not for the hard back-breaking work of non-whites. The American History you continue to teach in our schools is nothing but propaganda for your cause and brain washing for the weak. You continue to try to break the will of those that are not like you and don't agree with you but what you have always failed to accept is that you don't have, have never had and never will have the strength and perseverance of those you continue to want to oppress.

You think and behave as you do because you are weak, lazy and envious of what is different than you. Your self-loathing trickles on to others because you just don't know how to be comfortable in your own skin. When you look in the mirror or at your family, friend's and neighbors you don't see beauty. You are even upset now that your Ancestry DNA reports are not what you expected. There are over 90 hate groups in the USA and about 40 in NYC yet you still will not stop those that believe in full equality for all from standing against you.

My daughter is one of those. I do not want any harm to come her way, but I couldn't be more proud of her if I tried. I know that she will forever do what she can to stop you from growing. I know that in her heart there is love where in yours there is only hate. I know in her mind are facts where in yours there is nothing but blinding smoke. I don't know where your journey will end but I know that if you think you will just railroad your way to victory you are DEAD wrong.

Caught in a Cycle of Hate.

Now I know that in our safe towns, jobs, and homes we feel that things don't affect us but they do. My child could be your child, the woman who was run over could have been your sister. Those men we see bloodied on the front page of newspapers could be our partners, sons, or brothers. We are all connected. No one is better than. Let's start a conversation that sparks action to a better way of life and a healthier, safer, human society.

What do you think? Share your thoughts.

Always stress-free xo, Mari
